The truth about the 2006 Fiji coup

The media and many governments have treated the coup in Fiji as if it was some life threatening event that puts tourists in grave danger. This perception could not be further from the truth. The "coup" is localised to the city of Suva where road blocks have been established (just making traffic conditions more chaotic than ever!) and the removal of the Prime Minister and the government by a power-hungry Commander with a tiny but well-equipped army (thanks Mr Howard - Australian Prime Minister).

This is the fourth coup in Fii in twenty years - it is almost a national sport - and no-one gets hurt just a few local egos are bruised.

If you contact QANTAS call centre on 131313 (Australia) you will find that travellers in the know realise this truth and airline bookings to Fiji are as strong as ever with very few cancellations except for those spooked by the ever dramatizing media! Yes, the airlines still fly to Nadi - this is Fiji-time after all!

You do not have to travel through the city of Suva to go to any of our villages. Most of our hosts are not even aware that the coup is on - and village life goes on as before.

So the bottom line is if you go to Fiji at this time the chances of you being caught up in the coup are greater than winning lotto. The sad truth is that the rumour mongering by the media and the legalistic approach taken by governments really hurts the local Fijian economy and has an enormous negative impact on villages - even more reason for you to come visit!
