Before the arrival of the white man the villagers living in the Yasawas had a unique way of alerting other villagers in this island group to the presence of a person or people of unknown or unwanted origin. Not unlike the red indians of north America the Fijians used to light fires on top of the volcanic outcrops that dominated their island. Waya island has three, Naviti has two and Matacawalevu has one of these granite mountains. The other villagers would see the fire and watch out for the unwanted men and/or women invading their islands.
Strange but true!
